First and Third Fridays Returns This Friday
First Fridays returns, encouraging you to party with a purpose, hosting Departure back at the SunTrust plaza in Downtown Roanoke!

The party starts at 5pm and tickets are only $5! Plus, drink tickets are only $4 for beer and wine. Hard to beat that!

First and Third Fridays will also be supporting between four and six charities for each event. This week's installment will benefit Roanoke Amateur Sports, Roanoke Interfaith Hospitality Network, Habitat for Humanity, Pathfinders for the Greenway, and Valley Beautiful.

Want a little more information about the organization, itself? Here's what the First Fridays website has to say:

"First Fridays at Five was established by Barry Simmerman and Richard Beard in 1989. The first event took place on August 4, 1989.  850 partygoers were in attendance and in it’s first year, 4 charities received $1350.

The next year it was clear First Fridays was a success.. In 1990, we incorporated, elected an 11-member board and expanded its season from April through October.

Originally located at Century Square First Fridays grew quickly moving to First Union Plaza (near the City Market), and in 2005 moved to the Downtown Rail Car Lot. This year we are continuing to grow, moving to the SunTrust Plaza situated on Franklin Road, between Anthem, SunTrust Bank and Norfolk Southern.

First Fridays Roanoke continues to grow each year gaining record attendances and donating over a million dollars to more and more charities in the Roanoke Valley."

And, last but not least, here's the schedule for the season:

June 15Southern Culture on the Skids

Hope you can make it out, and don't forget to "Party with a purpose!"

57 Hours in the House of Culture
In 2002, Chechen terrorists seized a theatre in Moscow and hundreds perished during a failed rescue attempt involving poison gas. Now, night after night, the ghosts of the dead theatre-goers relive the terrifying experience of being held hostage.

This is the premise for Studio Roanoke's newest production, written by Dwayne Yancey, a senior editor at the Roanoke Times.

Although a bit darker than some of his other forays into playwriting, this piece promises to be an interesting experience for all theatre-goers.

If you would like to go to the play, it shows Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm and on Sundays at 2pm, May 16th through May 27th. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors, students, and active duty military.

Local Colors Festival Begins Saturday

Roanoke's annual Local Colors Festival is just around the corner, taking place Saturday May 19 in Elmwood Park, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year's multicultural offerings will also include gospel music and ballet. This year, Local Colors celebrates Poland as its featured country -- one of 90 countries and cultures that participate year after year.

Emcees for this year will include WFIR's Bob Clark, WDBJ-7's Brent Watts, Holanni Davis and Chris Hurst and Big Lick Conspiracy's Ross Laguzza.

Booths will be set up on Jefferson Street and Bullitt Avenue and admission is, as always, free.

The day begins with the Parade of Nations, and performances will include: Michas Polish Folk Dance Troupe at 12 noon and 3 p.m., with audience participation. Non-stop dance and music from Sudan and South Sudan, Mexico, South Korea, Nepal, India, Philippines, Ireland, Turkey, Syria, Ukraine, China, France, Brazil, Egypt, Germany and Haiti. Also performing this year: the Roanoke Ballet Theatre, the Patrick Henry High School Gospel Choir and St. Gerard's Choir.

The National Anthem will be sung by Patice Holland, attorney with Woods Rogers, formerly a youth leader for NCCJ (National Conference for Community and Justice) and a Franklin County native.

Everyone's favorites will be in abundance: International food cooked by people representing their countries, merchandise and exhibits. Cox Communications' children's area will include face-painting, a caricature artist, Polish crafts and more. The annual closing ceremony invites everyone to sing songs of goodwill.

Blue 5 Celebrates American Craft Beer Week
If you haven't been informed, consider this the wake-up call to your tastebuds. This week celebrates American Craft Beer Week, with a focus on all of the amazing craft beers that are coming out of American breweries.

One of my personal passions is trying all of the inspiring creations that American craft brewers are coming out with, and the best place to expand my palate is at Blue 5. Featuring 46 awesome beers on tap, it is a tasting mecca for any beer aficionado.

So, with all of that being said, Blue 5, located at 312 Second Street, is a great place for you to come out and enjoy American Craft Beer Week with their Tap Takeover nights.

Blue 5 will be hosting three more of these awesome nightly events, featuring Smuttynose Brewing Co. tonight, Goose Island Beer Company (out of Chicago) on Thursday, and Green Flash Brewing Co. (out of San Diego) on Friday.

The times of these events does vary, so here is a list of when they will be tapping the keg. For Smuttynose, they will be sampling Really Old Brown Dog and Smuttynose IPA, and the party begins at 5pm. The Goose Island sampling begins at noon on Thursday, and they will be sampling Sophie, Matilda, and Pierre Jacques. (This is especially cool because it's the first time that Goose Island has made an appearance in this area, so come out and show them some love!) Finally, on Friday Blue 5 will be sampling Green Flash's West Coast IPA, Green Flash Imperial IPA, Hop Head Red, and Le Freak (which is probably one of my favorite names for a craft brew). The Green Flash tasting will begin at noon Friday.

So come Downtown, celebrate American Craft Beer Week, and get to try some tasty brews at Blue 5!
